Is Ice Cream Addictive?

 

We all know that it’s hard to have just one spoon of ice cream. But can ice cream really be as addictive as some drugs? A 2012 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition says yes. In fact, research suggests that ice cream can leave the brain wanting more in the same way that cocaine does.

The study showed that overeating high fat and high sugar foods reduced the reward response in the brain associated with those foods, in essence building a tolerance. This leads to increased use as a result of the individual trying to achieve the same reward response in the brain.

“Our results provide novel evidence that frequent consumption of ice cream, independent of body fat, is related to a reduction in reward-region responsivity in humans, paralleling the tolerance observed in drug addiction.” the study states. (Continues on Page 2)
